A Waterfall in the Shape of a Sacred Leaf
Bopath Ella is one of Sri Lanka's most distinctive and famous waterfalls, named for its unmistakable shape: the cascade narrows into the form of a "bo" leaf (the heart-shaped leaf of the sacred fig, Ficus religiosa). Fed by the Kuru Ganga near Kuruwita in the Ratnapura district, it's around 30 metres tall and beautifully accessible.
What to Expect
- The iconic leaf-shaped flow narrowing to a point
- A short, easy walk from the entrance, past small shops and stalls
- A popular bathing pool at the base (when flow is safe)
- A relatively low-altitude, warm setting compared to the high hills
Best Time to Visit
The leaf shape is clearest at moderate flow; after very heavy rain the falls broaden and the form is lost (and swimming becomes dangerous). Visit on a dry-season morning for the classic look and calmer water.
Safety
- The pool has claimed lives over the years — never swim when water is high or fast.
- Heed local warnings and keep off slippery rocks.
