The Big Rainforest Near the South Coast
Kanneliya is the largest rainforest in Sri Lanka after Sinharaja, and the most accessible major one from the south coast — only about an hour inland from Galle. Together with the neighbouring Dediyagala and Nakiyadeniya forests it forms the KDN forest complex, a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a vital watershed feeding the Gin and Nilwala rivers.
Why It's Special
- High endemism — a large share of its woody plants and many of its animals are found only in Sri Lanka.
- Waterfalls — Kanneliya is famous for beautiful cascades such as Anagimala Falls and Narangas Ella, reachable on forest trails.

Trails of varying lengths start from the forest office, and a guide is required — they'll lead you to the waterfalls and point out wildlife. Routes range from short loops to half-day hikes to the viewpoints and falls.

- Best time: The drier months (January–April) make trails and falls easier.
- Leeches: Expect them after rain — leech socks help.
- Bring: Swimwear if you want to dip in a forest pool, plus water and grippy shoes.
