Buying Gems in Sri Lanka — Do It the Smart Way
Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to buy sapphires, and many visitors leave with a beautiful stone or piece of jewellery. But the gem trade also attracts scammers who target tourists. With a little knowledge, you can shop with confidence and bring home something genuine at a fair price.
This guide covers the essentials — but remember the golden rule: if a deal seems too good to be true, it is.
1. Buy From Licensed, Established Dealers
The single most important step. Reputable gem shops are registered with the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) of Sri Lanka. Look for:
- A proper shop with a fixed address (not a street stall or a "friend's cousin")
- NGJA registration displayed or available on request
- Willingness to provide a written receipt and certification
Avoid buying gems from strangers who approach you on the street, at temples, or in tuk-tuks with a "special deal." This is the most common way tourists get cheated.
2. Insist on Certification
For any significant purchase, ask for a certificate from an independent laboratory. The most trusted is the GIA (Gemological Institute of America); reputable local labs include the NGJA's own laboratory. A certificate should state:
- Whether the stone is natural, synthetic, or treated
- The type of gem and its weight in carats
- Any heat treatment (very common and accepted) versus other treatments (which lower value)
For an expensive stone, it's worth having it independently tested before you pay.
3. Understand What Affects a Sapphire's Value
The classic "Four Cs" apply, with colour being king for coloured gems:
- Colour — a vivid, even cornflower blue commands the highest prices. Too dark or too pale reduces value.
- Clarity — fewer visible inclusions is better, but tiny natural inclusions can actually prove a stone is genuine.
- Cut — a good cut maximises brilliance and colour.
- Carat — price rises steeply with size, especially above a few carats.
4. Know the Common Scams
- Glass or synthetic sold as natural — synthetics are real sapphire chemically but mass-produced and far cheaper. Always certify.
- "Topaz" or cheap stones dyed/heated to imitate sapphire.
- The bait-and-switch — you inspect a real stone, but a different one is wrapped up for you. Keep your eyes on your stone the whole time.
- The "export gems for profit" con — a friendly stranger asks you to carry gems abroad to "avoid tax," promising a cut. It's a classic fraud — walk away.
- Inflated "tourist prices" — always compare a few shops before buying.
5. Simple Field Tests (Not a Substitute for Certification)
These can raise red flags but won't replace a lab:
- Look through it: Natural stones often have tiny inclusions; perfectly flawless cheap "sapphires" are suspect.
- Temperature: Real sapphire feels cool to the touch and warms slowly.
- Scratch resistance: Sapphire is extremely hard (9 on the Mohs scale) — but never let anyone scratch-test a stone you don't own.
- Doubling: Look closely with a loupe — certain fakes show doubled facet edges.
6. Negotiate, and Pay Smart
- Bargaining is normal — politely negotiate, but don't expect huge discounts from honest dealers.
- Prefer credit card for large purchases where possible (it gives you recourse).
- Always get a detailed receipt with the dealer's name, stone details, and price.
- Keep certificates and receipts for customs when you leave.
7. Where to Shop
Ratnapura is the source of much of the trade, but reputable, certified dealers also operate in Colombo and Galle, often with better security and English-speaking staff for visitors. Wherever you buy, prioritise reputation over a rock-bottom price.
