Big Wilderness Feel, Close to the City
Bodhinagala — also called Dombagaskanda — is a small but surprisingly rich lowland rainforest near Ingiriya, only about an hour and a half from Colombo. Its accessibility makes it one of the best places for a quick rainforest fix without a long journey, popular with birdwatchers and day-trippers.
A Forest Hermitage
The reserve is home to a tranquil forest monastery (aranya), where monks live in meditation among the trees. The walk up to and around the hermitage is peaceful and atmospheric, with the forest closing in around the path.
Wildlife
For its modest size, Bodhinagala packs in plenty:
- Endemic and migrant birds — a favourite with birders
- Purple-faced langurs and giant squirrels
- A wealth of amphibians, reptiles, and butterflies
- Rich plant life including medicinal species
Visiting
Trails are short and manageable, making it ideal for families and casual walkers. It's a great half-day trip, easily combined with other stops on the way to or from Colombo or Ratnapura.
Practical Tips
- Best time: Early morning for birds; drier months for comfortable walking.
- Leeches: Present after rain — take basic precautions.
- Respect: It's an active monastery — dress modestly and keep noise down.
