Whether you're here for a layover before heading to the hill country, or staying a full week to explore, choosing the right neighbourhood makes all the difference.
1. Fort & Pettah — Historic Heart
Best for: Business travellers, history lovers, budget stays
Fort is Colombo's commercial centre, home to the iconic Galle Face Green, the Grand Oriental Hotel, and the Dutch Hospital shopping precinct. Just next door, Pettah is the city's chaotic, colourful market district — an assault on the senses in the best way.
Accommodation options: Mid-range hotels and guest houses, some budget boarding options near the train station.
Getting around: Walk to the Galle Face beachfront promenade; 20 minutes by tuk-tuk to Cinnamon Gardens.
2. Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) — Upscale & Green
Best for: Upscale travellers, those visiting embassies, long stays
This leafy, wide-boulevard neighbourhood is home to Viharamahadevi Park, the Colombo National Museum, and many of the city's diplomatic missions. It has a refined, almost European feel.
Accommodation options: Boutique hotels and high-end guest houses; some home stays in restored colonial bungalows.
Pro tip: Book early — quality properties here fill quickly, especially October–March.
3. Kollupitiya (Colombo 3) — Shopping & Dining Hub
Best for: Foodies, shoppers, first-time visitors
Kollupitiya, known locally as "Colpetty", is packed with restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and malls. It sits between Fort and Bambalapitiya along the coast road, making it extremely convenient.
Accommodation options: Wide range from budget guest houses to comfortable three-star hotels.
4. Bambalapitiya & Wellawatte — Local Vibe
Best for: Budget travellers, longer stays, experiencing everyday Colombo
These southern Colombo suburbs offer a more authentic local experience. Wellawatte in particular has excellent street food and a large Tamil community, making it great for cultural immersion.

5. Mount Lavinia — Beach Getaway
Best for: Beach lovers, couples, weekend breaks
Just 12 km south of Fort, Mount Lavinia has the closest proper beach to central Colombo. The area is relaxed, walkable, and has a good mix of accommodation from backpacker hostels to boutique hotels.
